How to prevent rust on steel structures: A protective shield for buildings, ensuring durability for decades.

The number one enemy of steel structures is corrosion, which results from the reaction between steel, water, and oxygen. If left unchecked, it not only makes the building look old and unsightly, but also affects its long-term structural safety.

Effective rust prevention isn't just about applying a topcoat; it's a systematic engineering process. This article will introduce you to internationally standardized rust prevention methods that help extend the lifespan of your building.

1. Surface Preparation: The number one priority.

Before applying any paint or coating, "surface preparation" is the most important step. If the steel has moisture, oil stains, or rust, the paint will not adhere and will peel off quickly.
  • Shot Blasting: is currently the best surface preparation method. It involves spraying metal particles at high speed to remove dirt and rust, while creating a rough profile on the steel surface. This ensures the strongest adhesion of anti-rust paint.
  • Wire Brushing: The use of wire brushes (often used in small-scale maintenance) is less efficient than sandblasting in major structural work.

2. Protective Coating System

Anti-rust painting in industrial applications is typically applied in a three-layer system for complete protection.
  1. Anti-rust primer: The layer that comes into direct contact with the steel. Typically, an Zinc-rich epoxy primer is used to prevent chemical reactions.
  2. Intermediate Coat: This helps to increase the thickness of the paint film and acts as a barrier to prevent moisture from penetrating the metal.
  3. Top Coat: Provides aesthetic appeal and protects the inner anti-rust layer from UV damage (usually polyurethane – PU type paint).

3. Hot-Dip Galvanizing: The option for maximum durability

If your building is located in a high-humidity area or near the sea where salt spray causes corrosion, galvanizing is the best solution.
  • Process: The steel is immersed in a bath of molten zinc at approximately 450°C, allowing the zinc to adhere uniformly to the steel.
  • Advantages: Provides rust protection for 30-50 years with virtually no maintenance, and can withstand corrosion even with minor surface scratches.

4. Structural Design for Risk Reduction (Detailing for Corrosion Resistance)

Skilled engineers will design structures to "avoid" rusting from the outset.
  • Drainage: Designed to prevent stagnant areas where water can accumulate.
  • Access for Maintenance: Joints must be designed to be easily accessible for future inspection, painting, and maintenance.
  • Choosing standard steel: Steel with a smooth surface finish will result in a more thorough paint coating than lower-grade steel.
